A group of excited knitters and non-knitters gathered yesterday to hear about The Knitting Project. Suzanne talked about the idea of a community based public art project using knitting as a way of embellishing some of the animal statues around town this winter. She showed images of what others have done around the world and inviting participants to think creatively. With a focus on funny, members of the group laughed and some wanted to start knitting immediately!
For those who couldn’t attend, here is a summary, and info on how you can get involved:
Dr. Lisa Ridgway and I have cooked up the project as a result of a conversation we had last summer. We have gotten permission from several sculpture owners with more in progress as I write. Pictures of the animals already involved follow.
The idea is for a few people to collaborate on an idea for each animal. Participants will come up with the designs, folks from Knit On Pearl and veteran knitters in the group will be on hand to help with technical issues. Here are a couple of examples of what has been done in other locations.
The work will go up in December around the Winter Solstice and come down in March around the Vernal Equinox.
Don’t know how to knit? No problem – this is designed to also be an entry to the world of knitting. Come to the knitting sessions and work with a knitting pro to master the simple steps to becoming a knitter.
Don’t want to knit? No problem – there are other ways to be involved – help in brainstorming what sort of adornment animals might sport. Help with measuring, yarn management and social support! Help installing, monitoring while the work is up, and help de-installing.
