Tour of Crown Point Press

In mid January I had an opportunity to get a tour of Crown Point Press which is located in San Francisco.

This legendary print workshop, publishing house, gallery and group workshop location is an institution well known by any art student studying in California and probably beyond. When I was in school at UCLA, this well respected organization was introduced to us. It was known that several of the professors past and present at UCLA had been invited to come and make prints, have books printed and languish in the setting. Oddly, as I toured the facility the printing crew was working on some prints of Chris Burden’s, who was teaching at UCLA when I attended. A quick look at the current faculty list shows Chris as an emeritus faculty today.Crown Point was started in 1962 as a print workshop by Kathan Brown. In 1965 the organization began publishing prints. I was told that Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud were two artists whose works were produced early on and helped support the flegling organization. The place was not dominated by high tech equipment or computer monitors. It was oddly serene and inviting.
